North San Diego County to become 442 Area Code
AREA CODE CHANGE:
The California Public Utilities Commission approved a plan that splits San Diego's northern tier from the existing 760 area code to create 442. Wireless phone users with 760 numbers will have to switch to 442 along with everyone else.
Customers will be able to begin dialing the new area code on October 24, 2008. The 442 area code will become mandatory on April 24, 2009. A recorded announcement will inform callers they must dial the 442 area code from April 24, 2009 until July 24, 2009.
The numbering plan administrator estimates the numbers created by the new 442 area code should last for 22 years. The 619 area code will be exhausted in 2013 and the 858 area code in 2026.
New 442 Area Code Boundaries - the 442 area code would be assigned to users in 17 communities, including Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, San Marcos, Vista, Warner Springs, Ramona, Julian and Borrego.
